Courage and Complicity in the Heart of Empire

Rick Ufford-Chase, PPF Co-Moderator, preached this sermon at Church of the Reconciliation in Chapel Hill, North Carolina on February 14, 2016. This sermon weaves together many issues and themes that are important to PPF (including many issues that will come up at the General Assembly in June 2016) and calls us to resist the temptations of Empire and instead commit ourselves over and over again to peacemaking, just as Jesus did in the wilderness.

This is what community looks like.

Yesterday was the first day of Ramadan, and the plan was for our community to gather for an Iftar - the meal at sunset with which Muslims who have been fasting break their fast. Instead we gathered around a small table with nine candles that were lit as we read the names of each of those killed on Wednesday night at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, SC.

Colombia Delegation Report

In February, a small and committed group of PPFers went to Colombia to celebrate ten years of our partnership with the IPC and to discern how we can best continue the important work of accompaniment that has been a vital part of our work together. Without trying to rehearse the entire trip, I can tell you that we spent time in each of the three Presbyteries. In each one, there was agreement that the accompaniment work has been important, and that it remains important as we look to the future. Each Presbytery has a different approach – in some ways even a different theology of accompaniment.
