COLOMBIA: Exploring Nonviolence, Practicing Peace
A Delegation presented by the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship
Despite its lush jungles, breathtaking vistas, and vibrant culture, the country of Colombia has been mired in violent and protracted armed conflict for generations. It is ranked the highest in the world according to United Nations estimates for IDP’s or Internally Displaced Persons (refugees who do not cross borders). The Iglesia Presbiteriana de Colombia has courageously stood in the midst of the conflict in Colombia as a clear and strong voice for nonviolence, dignity and justice for displaces persons, and as a place of risk-taking ministry in the midst of a deeply conflicted environment.
How can we in the North American church learn from the faithful witness of the church in Colombia? How has United States foreign and trade policy played a role in the conflict in Colombia and the forced displacement of several million people? What is an appropriate response for us to make? How can we deepen our commitments to nonviolence as Christians? How can we develop equitable and just faith-based partnerships in a time of increasing globalization?
Join us as we explore these issues in Colombia.
On this delegation we will:
• Visit with the Iglesia Presbiteriana de Colombia (Presbyterian Church of Colombia) primarily in the Urubá Presbytery of northwest Colombia, the most rural, and most deeply affected by violence and displacement of the three Presbyteries.
• Visit the nation’s capital of Bogotá
• Meet with church communities and leadership, NGO’s, US and Colombian governmental officials, and community groups
• Explore nonviolence and Christian faith
DELEGATION LEADERSHIP:
The delegation will be co-led by Rev. Shannan Vance-Ocampo and Rev. Linda Eastwood who provide leadership and oversight for the Colombia Accompaniment Program.
