Delegation to the Philippines - Jan 2009
January 2-17, 2009

Your very presence can prevent violence, as a visible demonstration of the international attention being given to human rights abuses in the Philippines. Join us as we continue this important work with our sisters and brothers in the Philippines.
This delegation offers North Americans an exposure to the life and struggles of people of faith in the Philippines. In particular, participants will work with the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP), the Presbyterian Church (USA)’s partner church, to see how its members manage threats of human rights violations and learn how the church carries out its prophetic calling. This trip will expose participants to the national church’s struggle to raise the voice of the marginalized and threatened in an atmosphere of intimidation. Additionally, participants will glimpse into the lives of ordinary Filipinos as they struggle with poverty, globalization, and militarization. The delegation’s goal is to create relationships between North Americans and Filipinos, so that we may walk in solidarity with one another.
I had the opportunity to be on "holy ground" and God challenged me to take off my shoes and feel deeply the cries of the earth in the Philippines…and I did. My heart was stretched and full, and Martin Luther King Jr.'s words that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere echoed inside of me. It was then I realized that my seemingly insignificant part working for justice does matter on a very global scale.
