Truth and Action Litany following gun violence

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action. –1 John 3:18

A Call & Response Litany

Loving God, you have told us – and shown us how – to love you, and our neighbor,

 with our minds, hearts, strength, spirits – our whole selves; and yet, we do not.

We make and worship idols of intellect, might, rights, free will, domination, power and wealth.

We live in fear of neighbors near and far; we commit violence against one another and the earth;

 and we glorify others who do this on our behalf.

But still, you call us to merciful, universal, justice-seeking love.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.

Ever-present and Compassionate One, you have commanded us to put down

 our weapons of war and oppression and instead, to cultivate the earth,

 and bring healing to one another in times of pain and suffering.

But we often run out of compassion and claim that healing is too costly.

We offer words of “thoughts and prayers” and then go about our business,

 leaving the suffering to tend to themselves.

Break open our hardened hearts so that we may respond with vulnerability and tenderness.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.

Holy Word-Made-Flesh, you proclaimed that the truth will set us free, that You are the truth.

And yet, we are deceived by the lies that violence and death can bring peace or restore balance; that “good guys with guns” can save us.

Show us your Way.  Guide our feet into the way of peace.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.

Empowering Spirit, you fill us with spiritual gifts to serve the world you so love.

But often, we do not.  We are afraid to express unpopular beliefs;

 we are attached to our privileges, conveniences and position;

 we remain paralyzed by political gridlock.

We burden ourselves, our children and our children’s children with debt

 to pay for more guns, more weapons, more war, more death,

 clinging to false hopes and rhetoric that this time,

 it is for the right reasons, this time, it is justified, this time, war is the answer.

But it is not.  War is not the answer.

Fill us with the courage we need to do the things that will bring

 your justice, your peace, your shalom.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.

Let us love, not just in words or speech, but in truth and action.  May it be so.  Amen.
